Description
The Gulielmus Taurasi Riserva DOCG 2020 demonstrates quite impressively why Aglianico is one of Italy’s great red grape varieties. The grapes come from a small plot in Contrada Baiano near Castelfranci, at an altitude of around 350 to 380 metres above sea level. After being harvested by hand, the wine is aged for 18 to 24 months in oak and then for more than two years in the bottle.
In the glass, it’s not just about power. The 2020 vintage combines floral notes with white pepper, wild cherry and raspberry. On the palate, the typical structure of Aglianico comes to the fore: firm yet refined tannins, plenty of tension and a long, spicy finish. It is precisely this blend of power and elegance that makes it truly exciting. Wine Enthusiast has awarded this vintage 94 points.
This is definitely not a red wine to be enjoyed casually, but rather a bottle for a fine meal and a bit of time in the glass. It really comes into its own with braised beef, lamb, game or a hearty ragù. And if you’re patient, you’d do well to put a few bottles of this in your cellar.
A Taurasi for anyone who loves great Italian reds and still has plenty to discover when it comes to Aglianico.
