A wine that never ceases to amaze – why? Because there are wines where you’d never guess the price, and for which you might well have paid considerably more. Ribera del Duero is synonymous with powerful, full-bodied wines with wonderful fruit and, in most cases, a noticeable oak influence. Yet in recent years, many wines from the region have reached a price level that can no longer be described as affordable. All of them? No, not all – it is precisely the youthful Ribera wines, such as this one from Díaz Bayo, that show just how much great wine you can get for very little money.

Fully ripe grapes result in a deep, dark, dense wine in the glass, only slightly translucent. On the nose, delicate toasted aromas, plenty of red berries and fruit, along with a hint of mineral notes – very well-balanced and appealing.

On the palate, the oak is noticeable; the wine feels fresh and youthful, with tannins present, though everything is still a little young. Nevertheless, it’s very mouth-filling and full-bodied, with distinct notes of red and black berries as well as a hint of liquorice. The mouth-watering acidity practically begs for the next sip; the finish lingers for a long time with red berries and fine tannins.

This really sounds like more than you’d expect at this price – a great recommendation for getting to know Ribera del Duero. Best served with red meat or straight from the barbecue.
