Hardly any other Austrian red wine has created such a stir over the last 30 years. Steinzeiler is a cult wine, and the 2017 vintage is now a limited rarity. The wine takes its name from the stony, calcareous soils of the Leitha Mountains, where vines have been growing for 2800 years.

It consists of 80% Blaufränkisch and 10% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zweigelt, followed by 30 months of maturation in small French oak barrels. The result is full power combined with elegance and charm. From the outstanding 2017 vintage, the wine is still young and is now reaching perfect drinking maturity. It is best to decant it for one or two hours beforehand. Then it will show its best side: silky, delicately supple and still powerful. It has plenty of ripe tannin with perfectly integrated wood, dark fruit with inviting sweetness, and complete balance. The finish feels endless. This is a powerful red wine that comes close to perfection and can certainly continue to mature until 2040.
