Sommer Riesling Handwerk 2022 Bio, 0,75 L

It’s no longer a secret: outstanding Rieslings can thrive on the Leithaberg — and this one is a prime example. We were thoroughly impressed during the tasting. What Leo Sommer has crafted here is nothing short of artisanal winemaking at its finest. No wonder James Suckling awarded it an exceptional 97 points.

The Riesling vines grow on sparse slate soils that lend the wine its unmistakable character. Following selective hand-picking and a 24-hour maceration, this expressive example was matured for 10 months in large wooden barrels and bottled unfiltered.

With a bit of air in the glass, it reveals intense notes of ripe apricot, subtly accented by fresh herbs. Dry on the palate (3 g/l residual sugar), vibrant and immediately engaging. This is a no-frills, honest Riesling with energy, clarity, and a compelling interplay of fruit and acidity. Pure varietal expression and a long, structured finish hint at strong ageing potential.

A true alternative to Lower Austrian Rieslings — and worth every cent. Whether enjoyed solo after a meal or alongside bold fish or vegetarian dishes, this is a wine that makes a lasting impression.
