Description
Lake Neusiedl in northern Burgenland offers ideal conditions for Zweigelt. Austria’s most widely planted red grape variety also has its protected designation of origin here, the DAC.
And if anyone truly understands Zweigelt, it is the Salzl winery. This Zweigelt Selection in magnum format is a fine example, made with very restrained use of barrique or new wood. The wine matures in stainless steel tanks and in used, older wooden barrels, which add structure while leaving almost no roasted flavours.
The aroma is immediately typical, with notes of cherries, sour cherries and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is very juicy and well-balanced, with soft, supple tannins and relatively low acidity. It is dry, showing plenty of ripe cherry fruit and a pleasant sense of sweetness, complemented by hints of bitter chocolate and a fresh, savoury finish.
A very typical Zweigelt, beautifully made and free of any rough edges. A true crowd pleaser, guaranteed drinking pleasure.
