White Rioja is still something of an insider’s tip and has long since proved itself every bit as good as the region’s classic reds! It is particularly in Rioja Alta, with its unique soils and climate, that white wines are produced which offer character, vigour and excellent ageing potential.

The Blanco Reserva from Marqués de Tomares demonstrates this impressively: after ageing in barriques and several years of maturation, it comes across as astonishingly fresh and lively – it’s hard to believe that the 2019 vintage already has a few years under its belt.

On the nose, there are notes of ripe pear, a hint of orange zest and a touch of honey, accompanied by delicate herbal spice and a hint of caramel that speaks to its maturity. Very complex, yet not at all tired or old.

On the palate, it is creamy and powerful, with ripe fruit taking centre stage, complemented by a pronounced, lively acidity that lends the wine freshness and vibrancy. The finish is long and well-balanced.

A Rioja Blanco for anyone who likes to think outside the box: perfect with poultry in a light sauce, pan-fried fish or simply on its own as a special discovery.
